the only thing that tells it to lock would be the speed sensor since it only locks in 3rd and 4th in normal operation...the pcm sends ground to the wire in the very center of the trans wiring plug, its a yellow wire with a blue tracer if i remember right...i guess it could be that the wire has been rubbed somewhere and is grounding out...check this with a ohm meter...with the truck in drive ohm from the wire to the frame and see what you got with the truck sitting still...shouldnt beep if it does its grounding out....other then that possiblity i'm sticking with it is the valve sticking in the open position after your up to speed

Default wire

Thanks again guys. I'll check the wiring before I dive into the valve body. Sounds cheaper

Default wire

Well, the wire isn't sending a ground signal to the solenoid. In fact, the converter stays locked even with the plug disconnected. The wire in the very center of the plug is green with an orange tracer. There is a yellow wire with blue tracer as cummin un glued referenced, so I checked it also. No ground on either one.
Is it dumb to replace the valve body, and not the whole transmission? 116,000 miles on truck.

no that wouldnt be dumb...plenty of guys have put a good convertor and valvebody in a stock transmission and it greatly improves the transmissions durability, given that the clutch's are in good shape when you do it...plus you can allways reuse the valvebody if you rebuild the tranmission later
