'01 Cummins boost bolt broke off in manifold-cummins.jpg

So somebody installed my "boost gauge stud", I don't know the exact term for it, in the general area of #23. Problem is they tightened the fitting ENTIRELY too much and it broke off. So now I have to try to get the rest of the threads that broke off in the hole out and find a bolt that fits to go back in there. Has anyone else had this happen? What's the best way of getting the remaining threads out? And where and what kind of fitting should I get to use #7 for my new boost line?

How deep did it break off?

A screw extractor is about your only bet that I can think of. I would try the square kind - and get a good quality one - Proto, Snap-on etc. Hit it with some Kroil beforehand, tap in the screw estractor and turn it out.

Left hand drill bits would work but wouldnt be very good as you would drop cuttings into your engine.

I'm not exactly sure how deep it's broke off. I've never really seen screw extractors work, perhaps people or myself just weren't using them correcty. My plan right now is to pull the injector lines, and the APPS so I can take that plate off and hope there's enough thread sticking out to back it out with pliers.

UPDATE: Upon futher inspection I've found that even if that plate comes off the manifold there's not enough thread to grad hold of and back the remainder of the bolt out. So does anyone know what exactly is under this plate? I don't want to try to drill it out and some of the old fitting or metal shavings fall in my motor and not be able to get the **** out. Does anyone by chance have a pic of what's underneath once you get all the injector lines, APPS, intake horn and that plate out?PLEASE HELP

the bolt your talking about gos thru the intake plate and into the head so i would do like your thinking and take everything off so you can get the plate off then all that is under it is just the open chamber for the intake runners of the head so you can lay a rag in there under where you will be drilling to catch the shavings
