'96 7.3L PowerStroke Started Missing, Died, and Now Won't Start
My son's 7.3L PS has left him stranded up camping. He was able to call me from some pay phone (What is that! . . LOL).
I saw him check the oil here before he left. It still looked clean (I'm jealous!) and it was right at the full mark. It isn't 200 miles up where he is in the forest. He said when he got there, it had a period of missing and what not when he got there and then it died and won't start. He says when he cranks on it there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust. He had checked his oil again and it was 2 quarts or more low. He also checked the HPOP reservoir and it was full. I wouldn't have expected this to cause a loss of oil to the HPOP. He did put in a quart of 30W as that is all he could get ahold of up there. Again, I wouldn't think this would cause him any trouble and certainly not keep the HPOP system from working. He has since gotten more oil and has it full.
He did state that he had not used near as much fuel as he would have expected out of that first tank. I told him that maybe he actually ran it out (Is the back tank really only 11 gallons?). He is charging the batteries now and will switch to the front tank when he tries to start it again.
He has also checked and has fuel at the Schrader valve on the fuel filter. But I have to wonder if he didn't run out when he got there if it doesn't just have some air in it. If it did run out of fuel, how do you bleed these engines? What else can he check? Is there a way to pull trouble codes without a code reader?
Thanks for any ideas you all might have,
Dan

Hmm...... Are there not any PS drivers out there?
I am starting to lean toward a bad IPR (The piston sticks in it's bore near the open end!). . . .
