Last week my truck was idling in my driveway when it all of a sudden started missing & blowing black smoke from the tail pipe. I went in the truck & accelerated to 3/4 throttle & found response sluggish below 2000 rpm. truck sat idling for another 15-20 minutes & all of a sudden and on it's own it stopped missing. I have driven the truck over 100 miles since the initial miss & yesterday evening it did the same thing only this time I had to pull over cause of the all the back smoke coming from the tail pipe (I didn't want to get pulled over). I turned it off & back on 3/4 times to see if the miss would go away & by the 5th time it wouldn't not start so I had it towed! I got my code reader & pulled codes p1316, p0500, p0720, p0722. I have changed the speed sensor & have found the on & off o/d button on the shifter doesn't work anymore. Any advise would help. Does my problem sound like the high pressure oil pump going out?

 

Check your injector harness plugs for melted terminals where they plug into the valve cover gasket for starters

 

Thanks Sideshow. I did check them & they are fine. I took apart & removed the driver side valve cover & discovered that the injectors aren't buzzing when I did the buzz test.

 

Have you found out any more on this? This sounds similar to my boys, except I don't know what the codes are.... Right now he is up in the forest camping (The truck is dead up there. . . . )
Do you know what these codes are? On my son's I told him to switch tanks because of the way it started missing and died, then the fact that he hasn't used as much fuel as expected to get up there that maybe his gauge is acting up and perhaps he is actually out of fuel. . . .

 

I looked up the codes & 3 out of the 4 had to do with the speed sensor (so I already replaced it) the remaining code had to do with the IDM. I'm getting ready to pull the passengers side valve cover tomorrow (I am almost willing to bet they won't buzz either). I suspect a malfunctioning IDM but I'm gonna verify fuel pump pressure unpluged/damaged harnesses before condemning it. I'm going to get this truck going. I appreciate people looking into my problem & making suggestions Thanks!
