Default help- ve pump problems

ive got a 1st gen in a chevy. it was running nice and would make 15# manifold pressure. i took the diaphram and fuel rod out, turned it about 120 degrees to get the deep side of the fuel rod toward the front, turned the smoke screw in about 2 turns and now it will only make 10# manifold pressure and still no smoke. i took it back apart but did not figure out what is wrong. i had to apply some effort with a pair of visegrips clamped to the diaphram nut to get the fuel rod out. is it possible that i damaged the pin that follows the contour of the fuel rod? any other ideas?

Did you set everything back where it was before you adjusted it the first time. You should be able to see the pin that rides on the fuel pin down in the hole. I wouldn't think you could damage it but IDK. Never heard of that before

when i took the contoured fuel rod out i could see where the pin followed the rod and the way that i put it back it should be getting more fuel but obviosly its not. it seems to me that the pin is stuck and will not come out and follow the contour. is there a way to make the pin come out when the fuel rod and diaphram is out? i read an old thread in which someone was not able to get the fuel rod back in because the pin was extended into the bore.

Move the throttle and the pin should come out into the empty hole further. With the fuel pin (cone) out you should be able to stick a small screwdriver or something down the hole and push the pin back in. NMaybe hit it with a shot of PB Blaster if its not moving freely

Jason,

Thanks for the info. I'll try that this afternoon! I noticed that you are from Tulsa. I live in Drumright.

I started to take the diaphram and fuel rod out but i felt a resistance before it came all of the way out. i figured that the pin had come out so i put it back together and drove it. now i am getting 15# of manifold pressure again. i think ill put some fuel additive in.
this engine had set for about 10 years before i got it. maybe the pump is really varnished up.
