Default Wrist ring on piston

My grandpa has a 2001 dodge 24 cummins 5 speed. He was hauling grain with it he noticed some knocking and there was oil coming out the blow by tube. He took it to a mech. and they said some wrist ring had broke on a rod on the piston. So now he has to do a $7000 overhaul. I know he has a chip of some kind in it, and he wants to know how it might have happened? If you guys have any ideas please get back.
Thanks

Wrist pins aren't known for breaking. It could have taken out the Wrist pin bushing, possibly. Another option is a broken compression ring. That would explain why the crank case is pressurized with cylinder pressure. Either way, I would either bore scope the cylinders or pull the head and inspect for damage before committing to a complete rebuild. Its easier to pull the motor with the head off anyways.

a rod SNAP ring could have broke and the wrist pin moved out. and it gouged the side wall and thats were the knock and blowby came from
