Unhappy Manual transmission problems - uhoh

Hey there , I am a new member of the everything LOL , well to break that down , a new diesel owner , a new member of this fine community. Well I have a manual transmission problem, and I need some ideas and advice.

The truck is a 1983 c30 manual trans (4 speed) 6.2 L dually . The truck has been sitting for over 6 years , untouched and bothered in the garage and yesterday it started up like it was no ones business for the 2nd time in 6 years .

Now there is a bearing screaming when you press the clutch down , ok , so its a throwout bearing or a pilot bearing , but what I am worried about is the pedal is really really soft , and its hard to engage and disengage out and in gear ..

Any suggestions please LOL ... I really appreciate it .. Mike

does your throwout bearing have a place to grease it if it does grease that and 6 yrs is a long time for something to be sitting might just take some time and a little movement to make everything work again

Thats a good question I will have to take a look at it , I know Im under the truck right now just trying to repair a brake line ... Also the darn trans is stuck in gear now , oooo please auto goddess show mercy on me ..

Ok Here is a Question I hope someone can help me with , As you all can see , I am a complete noob with transmissions sorry bout that .. It was suggested by a few people 1 on here and couple in Real life that I need to try putting fluid in the trans, see if that free's things up and brings the pressure back to the pedal. The question I have is the only plug I see is a plastic plug on top of the trans by the shifter and I turn it to unscrew it but all it does is turn there is a hole in the top of it .... Is this the right place to put tranny fluid in ???? Please let me know .. Mike

No that is not the right one. Somewhere on the side of the tranny is a pipe plug most likely with square recess in it that a ratchet will fit. Take that one out and if the fluid is up to the bottom of that hole it is full. That will not help a clutch problem though. With that amount of time sitting the flywheel and pressure plate are most likely rusty and putting it in gear and slipping the clutch a little will clean things up some. My best guess is it is time to replace the clutch and release bearing.

Thanks for the help , Im at a loss on what to do , I dont want to pull this trans apart since I never did it , But what can I say ... This trans has a PTO on it so I guess I am in for a treat of a life time .. Any other suggestions would be great ... just remeber , she is stuck in gear now , no pedal it doesnt engage or disengage the clutch , the throwout bearing is screaming when you step on the clutch and there isnt much clutch pedal at all ... Now I was told the clutch assembly everything was not that old when it was parked all those years ago , but then again if that guy did it he may have screwed it all up and parked it I dont know

If you can't get the clutch to release the pressure of the engine against the wheels will make it hard to get out of gear. Have someone try to rock the truck back and forth while you try to get it out of gear. I doubt that the tranny is the problem. Is it a hydraulic or manual clutch? If it is hydraulic you could try to bleed the system to get pedal again. If the release bearing is not greaseable you will have to drop the tranny to get rid of the squeal anyway. Most likely the clutch is your whole problem.

Hi Gradyc , Its a manual trans 4 speed and a a grease fitting ? I have been looking around the trans today and it seems that there is a 6 bolt hatch on the side of the trans plus I stuck my finger in the filling hole and I honestly couldnt tell if the fluid was up to the hole or not.

I was looking around and I seen the linkage where it is adjustable and I think thats the what fork that sticks out of the trans where the clutch rod pushes the fork in and when you release the clutch the spring pulls the for back out ?

I think thats what it is , if its not bare with me , its a metal thing sticking out that the rod pushes on the transmission to disengage it , well you get the idea , that thing doesnt have any pressure behind it and I touched the rod and it fell out or off the fork

Just feels like to me that there is no pressure in the transmission .. no pressure to release the clutch . Im going to try to adjust the linkage tomarrow and throw a little fluid in the transmission and disconnect the axle , so I can start it up and see if all that is going to circulate and maybe free something up ... keeping my fingers crossed .

The 6 bolt cover is for a pto unit. They usually have a cover on both sides of the tranny so you can put the pto where it will fit the frame. The arm coming out of the side of the bell housing is the clutch release fork. Is the other end of the rod that pushes it hooked to a Z bracket and another rod going into the cab or to a hydraulic cylinder? Taking the driveshaft loose will free up the tension on the gears and should let you shift in and out of gears. The first thing to do is adjust the release and see if you can feel any pressure when you push the pedal. If you can't get pressure on the pedal it is time to drop the tranny and fix the clutch problem. I do not think the problem is inside the tranny.

Alright Grady :-) THank you so much for the help so far , I have the drive axle off now and it free'd up the clutch like you said easy to shift around in gears . My next step is to adjust the pedal and see whats going on , I am actually letting it warm up right now , letting the motor run its 15 degrees here with the windchill so a nice warm wet driveway might be better , thank you all again and I will post with the following things I have done .. see if there is any difference , I know that rear axle looks off though . when I was taking it off it didnt look center with the front axle , maybe its the way I have the truck tilted up on one end .

Ok so here is a update , Horrible news , even though I free'd up the trans and the axle is off the truck , I reconnected the rod from the bracket to the clutch release fork as grady put it , but still have a screaming bearing when I push the clutch in , which I figured was going to be there, and I adjusted the rod adjuster all the way out against the fork and it really didnt do any good , still have a soft pedal , but the trans shifts like new with out no axle . um lets see , the pedal for the clutch comes down onta a bar that is connected to that is hooked up to the bracket that has the rod on there that just sits on the fork , Im looking around but I do not see any hydraulic cylinder. Where else to look ? Should I post some pics ? I m at a loss the only thing left drops the trans , that bearing has to be replaced and check the clutch over . where else can I look ? I think the big problem I am having right now is there is no pedal , I mean its soft, the rod is all the way out against the clutch fork, but when you push the clutch in doesnt even have any snap or you dont feel that release its like pushing on the gas pedal .

Since it shifts without the drive shaft you can pretty much stop worrying about the tranny. The problem is definitely the clutch. The release bearing screaming most likely has damaged the fingers on the pressure plate. The best thing you can do is get a replacement clutch set. The setup you described is a mechanical linkage setup so it will not have a hydraulic cylinder.
