I don't know if the universal ones are compatible with the factory sender or not. One option would be to send the old one to a speedometer repair shop and have it repaired. The speedometer in our dodge delivery truck went out and I took it to DNA speedometers in Tampa Florida and they fixed it right up. I would imagine there are speedometer repair shops in other cities as well but the one in Tampa was convenient for us.

let me see if i get this right... i have a 95 12 valve 2500 2wd auto and the speedo doesnt work but every once in a long while but the odometer works fine >> they both work off the same sensor so it cant be a sensor problem it HAS TO BE the actual speedometer?

That is absolutely right. It is an electronic unit and can be repaired. The one in our 92 was bad and I took it to DNA speedometers in Tampa Florida and had it fixed. I think they charged us about 130 dolors to fix it. There might be a speedometer repair shop closer to you.

Some parts fit a wide range of years and others don't. Most junkyards have interchange books that tell what years the part is interchangable with. Our 92 needed front fenders and I was able to get them from an 85 but other parts might only fit a couple of years.
