im going to laugh when thats was the problem all along in my truck and no one figured that out. but thats ok its an excuse to the wife to get a higher output pump and bigger injectors

 

Does anybody have a diagram or picture of the fuel shutoff solenoid. Do I just unscrew the 1" nut holding it in and pull the whole thing out and gut it or what. Gonna work on it tomorrow all day cuz I dont have classes tomorrow

Not yet cant get the fuel shutoff solenoid out. It is tighter than hell and its hard to get the wrench on it exactly right so its starting to round off. Any suggesstions?

Now that I've got that bracket out of the way i turned the key on and disconected and reconnected the wire a few times and I dont hear or feel anything clicking at all so atleast I think im headed in the right direction if I can just get the damn thing off of there

 

There is a tab thats cast in the housing above teh solinoid, you can grind that off for more room. Wont hurt anything

 

Roger, Im almost sure that is my problem now, I just checked contunuity thru that solenoid with an ohm meter and there is none from where the wire plugs on to it to ground.

They are kind of a PITA to get out, they are not in there real tight though. Backyard trick would be a pin punch and hammer and tap on the flutes to loosen it. (counterclockwise). Once loose and every thing is spotlessly clean around it, take it out. There will be a small spring like a ball point pen either in the end of it or in the pump. Underneath that is a small plunger like thingee, like a carburetor float valve. Other people have mentioned the VW replacement, I've had a used one in mine forever. Just ask for a fuel shut off solenoid for a 78 Diesel Rabbit and you'll be fine. Cleanliness is of utmost importance, so prepare ahead of time to be able to eat off of it. Good Luck.
