Default Cummins 48RE Problem with 1st gear

My 2005 with 82K road miles started to slip when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I have changed trans fluid and filters at 30K mile intervals so I took it in for a trans service thinking they could sort out the issue. The code reader said it needed a new pressure sensor and shift solenoid which was replaced. The trans now had no slipping and they had adjusted the bands to 72 inch lbs and backed off the set bolts properly however the release from 1st to 2nd won't happen until the engine is brought to redline and held there for a long time. When going up hill or there is a bit of a load then it doesn't want to release first gear. On level ground or a slight down hill it shifts smoothly and normally. If the tow/haul switch is engaged it seems to release 1st a bit sooner and has less of a chance of down shifting to 1st as it senses the load again. Reading the manual and asking questions on a forum or two I was told the TTVA could be bad so I replaced it with no change. I followed the reset process to sink the idle position when I connected it and still no luck. The trans makes no weird noises or other things and operates normally after it gets into second. I have driven 1000 miles since the repairs and I can always get it to release into second by letting off on the throttle but it will down shift if my speed is not up to the 2nd gear range or with a load. If I'm on a grade and start from a stop it will stay in 1st until the load disappears and I can back off on the throttle from red line and then it shifts. Each shift at red line or below is smooth and seems normal just like when I bought the truck! I don't tow, and I have used 4x4 in the snow maybe 10 times. The truck is stock and not abused so I'm trying to figure out the problem. I am 4 hours from my nearest Dodge dealer in Northern AZ so my local mechanic shop is now to the point of saying my trans is blown yet I can go anywhere with confidence as long as I don't need the trans to shift fast from a stop. Got any ideas the forum on my 48 RE operation was very informative so I,m throwing it out in hopes someone has an idea.

It doesn't slip anymore it just hangs in first! As I step on the throttle it starts off smooth in first but the engine continues up the the RPM as I apply the fuel the trans stays solidly in first and speeds the truck along until we reach redline which seems to be 3500 and then we just sit there at about 25 or so MPH in first at redline for a long time! If the trans is warm it will eventually release and shift smoothly into 2nd but firmly at that RPM. If I suddenly lift my foot and then press down on the throttle it will shift to second. If there is no load on the truck like going up hill it will stay in second but if there is a load it will downshift back to 1st? It is almost like the PCM is not programed properly to shift at the correct point and hold it in that gear as you use torque and apply more gas. If I floor it it just stays in first waiting for the engine to blow?

I also have an 05. When I took mine in and change the tranny fluid, I was having shifting problems from 1st o 2nd. On a gentle throttle, it would slip back and forth. I took it in and he adjusted the bands and it got worse. Didn't hang up like you are describing. Took and and put bands back. Replaced solenoid and it helped for a while but I have once in a while still. We had this tech bulletin come out a while back, but this tranny guy didn't have the equipment to do it and I haven't made it to a dodge dealer to try it. Here's the link, don't know if it will help at all but thought I would post.

Have a friend with an 04 had the same problem. He had the procedure done and it's fixed???

I swore that I thought the PCM/TCM was part of the problem! I'm going to have this done and see! It seemed like the trans remembered everything about how to shift after first but from first to second which was the solenoid and pressure sensor that they replaced it got screwed up! If now with increased pressure adjusted bands to stop the slip and a new unworn shift solenoid it would make sense that the PCM would not know the proper timing! Lets hope this works! Thanks and I'll report in after they reflash the thing!

Ok gang for all of you that read this thread here is what fixed it. The slipping that occurred was the governor solenoid and pressure sensor that Dodge seems to have a
problem with. When they were replace that fixed the problem but because my mechanic shop does not specialize in Mopar they either lied about adjusting the bands or backed them off too far. When I took the 3 hour drive to the dodge dealer to Flash or reprogram the PCM the only update was for 4th gear shifts so he said it probably had nothing to do with 1st gear to 2nd shifts. He flashed it to bring it current anyway! He said the 1st to 2nd band was so loose that when it let go of 1st it never found 2nd and when to 3rd which was the reason it would down shift back to first under load unless enough speed was attained for the 3 gear torque to handle the load. I never realized it wasn't going into 2nd because I don't tow anything and the shift seemed normal but the time it was taking to shift was the amount of travel the band leaver had to move and the skip 2nd in lieu of going to 3rd. So there you have it you need to find skilled people who you trust; guess who may not get any work from me in the future! Hope my problem will help someone else but I'm buying an inch pound torque wrench and learning to do it my self! CYAhttps://www.dieselbombers.com/images/smilies/Laie_98.gif
