Default 03 dodge tranny issues

I have a friend with a 2003 dodge 2500 cummins auto with everything stock except for a edge juice w/attitude, and right now he has lost overdrive completly and 1st and 2nd unles he shifts into them. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix it? One idea that we had is swapping in my old tranny, except that mine is from a 99. Are both the trannys the same in 99 and 03 and will it work without too much hassel? Thanks ahead for your input.

some 03 had 47re and some had 48re i think the so had 47 re ho had 48re so it would work if it is a so. i would just buy a suncoast or look at daves trans. but you will pend 4500 or more.

Sounds like time to rebuild or replace the tranny. The manual 1 and 2 use a different low clutch than the auto range so it sounds like you have burned clutches. How does the fluid smell? I think the 99 and 03 should interchange but it would be wise to double check before trying it.

Ya the tranny fluid is burnt and should have been replaced a while ago. the one that we were going to swap in was redone by dtt with a new tq, valve body & tranny pan. It worked well in my truck, i just took it out cuz i wanted a manual in my truck. Thats why we were going to go that way. His is not a HO .

Take a look at the shape of the pan. If they are shaped the same It should fit. Also look at the harness that plugs into the tranny to see if it is the same. When in doubt most junkyards have books that tell what fits what.
