Lift pump problem or something else?
I took my 1998 Dodge 2500 24v to the Dodge dealer recently for oil & fuel filter change about a month ago. When I picked it up, I was given a list of things which had been checked and needed repairs. One of the repairs was replacement of the lift pump. I am not a mechanic and have no idea what this is. At that time I had not noticed any problems, but now when speed reaches 40 to 42 mph, there are hesitations (?), almost like shifting back and forth, so I either have to slow down or speed up past the 42mph mark. Is this because the lift pump needs to be replaced or indication of some other problem? This is my 4th Dodge diesel, but my first 24v, and I never had this problem with the others. Appreciate any help and information you can give.
That particular problem wouldn't be because of the lift pump but if that lift pump is bad get it fixed or that small kind of expensive fix will turn into a $1200 plus new injector pump replacement. You really need a fuel pressure gauge on this truck though so that you know if your having fuel delivery problems before they become an issue.
Unless your dealin with one of the few dealers in the country that actually has a good diesel mechanic on duty, don't believe a word they tell ya. Most dealerships know almost nothin about our trucks, that's why were here.
