Fuel Guage Sender

Ran into a problem on friday driving down the road with the fuel guage reading half and then all of a sudden I stall out and am out of diesel. NOT GOOD. this is the first time the guage was inaccurate. Is it time to change the sender in the tank or do you think if was just a fluck?
