Default 93 F350 7.3 quits running

I have a 93 Ford F350 with a 7.3 with only 82,000 original miles, (I just got it) that simply stops running while driving down the road. I thought it was a fuel problem and it still may be but I have no where near as much experience with Diesel engines. I found a fuel line with a hole in it and replaced the fuel pump (mechanical) mounted on the block. The truck (a wrecker) will run fine most of the time at idle but when driving down the road it begins to stall, the fuel filter light comes on and it quits. Sometimes black smoke comes out right before it quits. It will sometimes pick back up and keep running and so far has re-started after 2 to 3 tries. I also changed the oil since it looked terrible thinking maybe that would help the injector pump. The guy I got the wrecker from said he just put new glow plugs, injectors and an injector relay. https://www.dieselbombers.com/images/smilies/dash2.gif

Did you change the fuel filter out?? Possible the sensor is bad, and needs replaced also.

you never talked about the fuel filter. Sounds like you need to change the fuel filter to me.

Yes, that was the first thing I did. I forgot to mention that. I have noticed that the Fuel Filter light usually comes on when I experience the problem, but not always. I have also replaced the fuel line going from the fuel pump to the line going to the filter because it had a small hole in it that I found when I put air pressure in the fuel tank to make sure the line was not stopped up. I looked for a crank sensor but did not find one around the harmonic balancer.

Which sensor could be bad? I don't have any way to read this ecm right now. My scan tool is OBD2. The check engine light has yet to come on.

You mentioned a fuel filter light. Should be a sensor somewhere around the filter.

will that actually make it quit running. There is a wire/plug going to the separator on the bottom of the fuel filter.

If it's faulty, dirty, or you got too much water in the fuel, it will. Remove the filter, then the sensor and let it drain into a clean container. If there is water in the fuel, there's the problem. If not, a dirty of faulty sensor.

The saga continues. Drove the truck to the car wash aprox 8 miles round trip. Drove under 2000 rpm and the truck never cut off. Intentionally kept it above 2000 right before I got home and it quit. Coasted into the drive and pulled the fuel filter off. I figured it would be empty but it was only down about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way from full. Doesn't that sound like a fuel delivery problem. Also checked the fuel at the beginning of this ordeal and there was no water.

Time to start tracing fuel lines from the tank, to the IP pump. You are sucking air somewere it sounds like.

or the lift pump can't supply the amount of fuel required over 2000 rpm. i'd put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see if you are loosing pressure at WOT....
