Default Need Help With 1993 7.3 Ford International Motor

I have 1993 ford deisel van with 160k. In the last 30k it has started to blow a lot of black smoke and I think excessive fuel consumption, as well as on start up I have to press down the throttle to get it to start. I have aredy replaced the fuel filter and blown out the return line. I have also replaced the glow plugs and fuel rail. Please post anything that you think might be a possible cause, in my book it says the timeing, but I am thinking it might also be the injectors or the fuel pressure regulator. Thanks- Jay

The return line doesn't hook up to the injector pump, does it?

return line comes from fuel rail, I have checked my air filter and changed my fuel filter, I also have cleaned out the crankcase breather. I don't know where I would have any air leaks? Everything is to factory spec so I am still lost.

You got a CEL lighting up? How does it do on power? Is it real laggy, or is it normal? Timing might be a little advanced.

Why is Excessive Smoke Coming from My Exhaust Pipe and How do I Repair It?

Black smoke: Caused by excessive fuel for the amount of air drawn into the cylinders. Some black smoke on hard accel or at higher altitudes is normal.
Excessive black smoke could result from restricted intake or exhaust, inoperative leaking or weak turbo (if equiped), intake manifold gasket leaks (turbo), leaking or worn injectors, fuel return or supply restriction, advanced injecion pump timing or defective injection pump. Maybe you jumped time ?
