Help!!! Guys My Son's Truck Died Here..
Started having trouble switching from first to second,. like it stuck in first. then after awhile it wouldnt even go into first. No power, giving it gas reves went up but not catching at all.. reverse worked for awhile but not anymore.. Its got a r700 corvette clutch or something he says. the truck is a 93 chevy gas. with a 350. 5.7 lt// I was going to take him down to check the codes right now, hes dead about 6 blocks from here. anything else we should check while were down there.. Checked the tranny fluid it was up but really gritty. the engine was hot,, the rad hose was supper hot and hard. we let it cool and added a bit of water...

tranny fluid was burnt , reddy brown for sure.

sounds like he cooked it. if the tranny fluid feels gritty then that means there is massive amounts of clutch material in the tranny pan. those 700R4 trannys are real picky when it comes to dirt, also they do not like to be stressed in overdrive ie. towing in OD and a high rate of speed for an extended period of time as it'll overheat with a quickness.....
you can try to drop the pan and out a new filter and fluid in it but i doubt it is gonna help. runnin it till it wouldn't go was the worst thing to do. let it cool and maybe it'll get to the house where he can work on it if he is only 6 blocks away. it'll take hours though for the tranny to cool down.
tell him he better start pushin'
EDIT : how old is the tranny that is in there now? when it was installed (if he had it done or did it himself) was the TV (throttle valve) cable (commonly known as the kickdown cable) adjusted properly? one of those out of adjustment will burn one up with a quickness.....

120 MPH or 120KPH?
there is a perty big difference..... either way it don't sound good. if it works tomorrow change the fluid and filter, crank it shift from reverse to drive and back a few times, give it time to engage (with your foot on the brake of course) that way it'll work the valves back and forth in the valve body. then drop the pan, and repete. if you see an improvement after the first flush on the second one drive it around the block EASILY and let it go through the gears once you installed the second filter and fluid and see if it'll go in all gears and make sure the clutches in it aren't slipping. it'll take a while to get the ratio of burnt fluid to good fluid acceptable.
also and tell him that wasn't the brightest thing to do. and also if that one is ok or if he has to get a new one get a good aftermarket cooler and put it up front between the grill and a/c condenser thingey. it'll help cool the tranny off better. currently it goes through the radiator so the coolest it'll get is engine temp, most chevy's opperate from 190* to 210* and tranny fluid starts breaking down at 230* or so (all numbers in *F)
hope this helps..... <------his next ride.....

Been there done that with a 89 Blazer. (POS). My transmission cooked itself on the way back from AB to BC back in 1997. I ran it into the ground literally. I sheared the drive shaft in to and locked the rear wheels stopping very quickly from 70 MPH to 0 in about 80 feet or so. The skid marks remaind on the HWY for about 5 years after that.

Tranny is 200. kms old the moter and tranny rebuit same time, moters at 435. The other owner, got it really hot and melted the whole harness. He installed a backing plate and a whole new harness.

I believe that the 93 is considered a 4L60E, which as far as clutchpacks and mechanicals is still a 700r4, the 4L60E is just a different valve body and electronic controls.
regardless, once you feel them slipping, it's already toast, there's nothing you can do to 'fix' it without a complete tear-down; I'm kinda surprised he made it a week once he noticed it slipping!
the worst thing you can do with a 700r4 is get a stock rebuild on it, if he can't afford a few upgrades, he needs to ride his bike for a few weeks longer. the Corvette Servo is what you're talking about, it's a round piston visible on the trans' right side, pushes on a pin and clamps a band around the input drum(I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about, right?...)...all that aside, the corvette servo is as important to a 700r4 as an EGT gauge to a BOMBed diesel...
anyway, find a trans shop that will put some high energy clutches in, a mild shift kit(usually called a stage 1 or stage 2) and a good, heavy duty towing torque converter; in addition to a typical rebuild. plus, these transmissions are very picky about running hot, don't know your son's ability but if you guys can't put an auxiliary trans cooler in, have the trans shop put one in for you.
the 700r4 is a fantastic transmission that has a horrible reputation from its OEM build 'quality'. I've built one for my '56 chevy, my sister's Camaro and my dad's 96 gmc...
