Default Duramax pulling problem

I have a 05 duramax that had the catalytic converter removed before I bought it. I have problems when pulling a trailer. Sometimes it will go into a “ limp mode” I guess you would called it. It’s like it has no power and when you try to accelerate it down shifts. I have to pull over, kill the engine and let set for a few minutes then recrank and go.
One mechanic told me the computer needs to be flashed. Does this sound right? And you does this?

It should be setting codes when it does this, have the codes pulled to get an idea of where to start. I will say it shouldn't have anything to do with the cat being removed. If it is the trans going into limp mode, then my first best guess would be that the previous owner had a programmer on it and limped the trans several times. After it has been limped it will limp again and again after that, each time at little easier than before.
