99 to 02 H/O
well here I go with my urgent issue I bought an 02 dodge ram 3500
h/o 6 speed with 50000 miles a real creampuff spotless at 59000 it spit number 6 injector and wiped-out everything that resembled a bearing so I pulled the motor and replaced It with a 99 unknowing there is a mid gen if you will so the 99 will start and run great then the tach stops and it top out at 60 mph and has a crank sensor and cam sensor, the 02 has one tone ring on the cam so I wired the 2 sensors together runs wicked rough on start up then tach quits top speed 60 I have talked to just about every conversion shop on the planet an they act like I have three heads and basically was told I have to get an 01 or 02 motor I find it hard to believe there is a kit to put a cummins in everything under the sun but not a dodge to a dodge pretty baffled and discouraged any help would be appreciated, oh yeah the ECM/PCM is unavailable from the 99 and will not plug in to 02 without changing everything anyways

There is a lot going on in this post but I will try to help. The 1998.5 to 1999 had the crank sensor only this was on the side of the block. the rest after that only have the cam sensor.
So we need to see what wires we need to operate the engine as it is a 99 model now. Let me grab a schematic and check it out.....

An HO engine is different in engine compression, turbo, VP44, of course cam sensor too.
The 99 is a SO engine it will run with the HO components but without some mods there are drive ability issues like rough idle, some throttle response issues.
The best case scenario is using the 99's ECM/PCM and harness that's the way it should go.
But we don't have that option so maybe we can see what the difference is in the two years and come up with a wiring swap on the ECM and PCM to fix it.

99 to 02
i would go the ECM/PCM but without some crazy wiring inside all the way to dome light because they have a completely different harness . i would absolutely sell the 99 motor out of my truck after i rebuild my 02 i guess that's the plan going forward, the 99 has 147000 miles and is clean clean, thats why i used it,after 10 seconds it smooths right out and like you said slow throttle response up to 60 and then that is it,i suspect if it was an auto it would not move at all or be even more gut less,i love this truck and i absolutely love cummins motors so when i recoupe some funds a rebuild is happening for sure with a few upgrades of course!. many many thank yous for the info,

Not sure what it is worth but I am interested. Have you checked to see if it's a 53 block. They had casting flaws.

53 block
yes it is a 53 block some do /did have a cracking issue this one is as clean as they come i have owned several 53 blocks and never had one crack one had over 300000 miles never an issue but some have,a friend had one that cracked and our best guess his motor mounts were also bad put in new mounts drilled the crack and pinned it went another 100000 without issues
