Default DODGE 5.9 L CUMMINS WON'T START

ok, anyone care to indulge me with this quandry? I have a 1990 Dodge W250 w/the Cummins Turbo Diesel.

These are my symptoms and recent fixes. Still no joy.

1. Truck was running and then died after about 30 mins of use(plowing). Towed truck back home. Next morning, checked fuel level, filter and lift/delivery pump. All of which are standard/plain jane Detroit issue.

2. Recently had dropped tank for body change out and frame preservation. Returned tank to original location. Installed 3/8" rubber line for supply and 1/4" rubber line for return.

3. Purchased new lift pump from NAPA, and new fuel/water seperator filter. Installed, bled system, no luck???

4. Read on this forum site about the Fuel Shut-off Solenoid and possible failure. Trouble shot that and found to be faulty. Removed plunger and spring and reinstalled solenoid body.

5. Got 5 gallons of fuel, ran line from can to fuel/delivery pump. Primed with installed lever on pump and primer bulb on line from can.

6. Had fuel to pump side of pump, moving forward to filter. Fuel at bleeder going into filter. Fuel at supply line and fuel at all six injectors. Tightened line off of pump, and cranked engine. Fuel sprayed at all injectors. Tightened all injectors.

7. Charged battery. Waited for WTS light to go off, cranked engine. Spun very fast and then chugged along and came to a steady idle, as normal.

8. Let engine run and warm up, about 20 mins. Engine stalled. Loop in can line. Reconnected fuel lines from tank. Filled fuel filter, primed pump w/ hand lever. NO FUEL AT PUMP. PRIMED SOME MORE. NO JOY.

9. Removed lines from lift pump and return off engine. Gob of crap blew out supply line. Nothing but fuel out of return. Reconnected lines, filled filter, primed, bled, etc.

10. Tried engine. NO FUEL AT PUMP. Only ran fuel in filter. Would not run any fuel from tank.

11. Removed sending unit. Blew air down thru supply and return. Nothing came out, except fuel.

Plan for tomorrow. Check lines for holes, bends, etc. Run new lines from tank to pump and return. Prime, bleed, try again.

Question, will rubber fuel lines collapse or break down with diesel fuel. Also, why won't lift pump draw any fuel from tank?

Any thoughts, ideas, etc, greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Try 1/2 hose, do you ave a fuel pressure gauge?? If so how much psi? And it sounds like you have an air intrusion between the tank and lp, I suggest that you get a raptor, it comes with all the hose and an awesome pump, its worth the money!!!

Thank you for the reply. That is where I am at as well. I think the 3/8" line is too small. I do not have a fuel pressureguage, but it is the 1st thing on the list once she is running again.

This is not my daily driver just yet, more my weekend utility vehicle. Nevertheless, it needs to run and run well. I am also looking at other delivery/lift pumps as they seem to be the way to go. I have driven/used it for 2 years with a leaky fuel line and it has given me no problems. Just figure when I try to correct some of the problems and I end up with a stalled diesel in 10 degree weax trying to plow my neighbors drive way.

Before I get a Raptor or AirDog, I need to get some fenders for the front. I live in the northeast and the salt and snow, plus 20+ years has taken his toll on the metal.

Thanks again.

Thats usually how it works . But I bet you are getting air in the line before the lp or right at it

Yes, it weren't for crap luck, I would have no luck at all. Not entirely true. The truck has been good and I picked it up with an 8' Diamond plow for $2500. It had 58K original mileage. The motor shows it, but the body got hit by a rust bomb.

I am going to get bigger line tomorrow and double clamp the connections and try all over again. I need to get it to run off the tank. A 5 gallon can on the floorboard is a no go if the wife needs to plow the driveway.

Thanks for your time. Hopefully, I can report back tomorrow eve with some positive results.

Is vent in fuel cap working ? Any whoosh sound when you open cap.If so Pump would be pulling against a vacuum.I also had a fuel problem with my 98 changed my pump bled it at the injectors and it works. If it is getting fuel and has compression which an engine with so little mileage I would think has it should run. Perhaps crap in the fuel lines have fouled the injectors. I also check for contaminated fuel with a water paste. I do not know if your 90 has a water indicator.

Ive seen modules crack in the tank and cause similar issues.
