Default 2001 7.3 hard start won't stay running

Im hoping I can solicit some help on this forum, it's my last effort before having my truck towed to a shop. I left town for 3 weeks and when I returned and went to start my rig it just cranked and would not start. I replaced the CPS with a good one from Ford, the tach does move when cranking. I also replaced the IPR, simply because I had a new one in the garage. The truck will sputter and eventually start however it will one run from 5-30 seconds max. It acts the same with the ICP plugged or unplugged, there is a small amount of oil on the ICP plug. I have a basic code reader and the only code I get is the p1298, I don't mind replacing the IDM if I need to however the fact that it runs perfect for the 30 seconds leads me to believe it is working, I could be wrong. I was able to borrow a Snap-on Solarus with the ford chip tonight only (they need it in the morning) and was able to verify that the fuel pressure when cranking hits 500-900 and the second it starts it jumps to 1500-2200. I don't know much about the scanner but I am not seeing anything glaringly incorrect.

Things checked:
HPOP oil level is good
CPS Is new
IPR is new
Batteries are brand new
Fuse 30 was blown, has been replaced and has not blown again
Water eliminator was added to fuel, I live in the Seattle area and condensation can be a problem
All fuses checked
Edge Attitude disconnected, 100% reverted to all stock programming
Oil and filter just changed, 0 miles on it

Any suggestions or assistance is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked fuel filter? Not sure what you mean by having your scanner read fuel pressure. Pretty sure it can't do that and those numbers must be icp #s. How many miles on the truck? Any unusual smoke or anything else you can give us. You don't need to replace the IDM. It either works or it doesn't.

Assuming it only has one fuel filter (not sure if there is a second one in the tank or frame-rails) I replaced it with a new one as part of my troubleshooting, I also verified the fuel bowl fills completely and quickly via the electric pump. The truck has 180K on it and has no unusual smoke. The scanner I was referring to is a Snap On Solorus, it can read over 70 engine parameters including fuel pressure at the injectors as well as the pulse width of each injector. Even using this tool the only code it throws is a P0603 and a P1298.

The most frustrating part is the truck has ran 100% flawlessly for the last 10 years (I am original owner) and aside from Brakes, Glow Plug Relay, CPS and Starter it has needed nothing as far as parts the entire time I have owned it. I left town for 3 weeks and now it will not run... Nothing at all was symptomatic the last time I drove it.

While its great that your scanner says it reads all those parameters, the pcm has no idea what your fuel pressure is so neither does your scanner. Either way, your truck has fuel pressure if the bowl fills typically. The thing you would want to watch with a scanner is icp (injection control pressure) and duty cycle %.

If you have a spare IDM try to swap it. You can have a IDM with drifting values and the engine can run be it crappy.

A guy with a similar problem on a Fordforum corrected his problem with IDM
Just wanted to let everyone know what I found. Apparently my snap on solus was giving me false ICP readings. Veried ICP manually all good. The p1293 and p1294 codes wouldn't go away. I removed the IDM and pulled it apart. Found 4 obviously burnt resistors. So I replaced the IDM. Everything working properly now. Thanks to everyone for their input.
good luck

What you are describing sounds like fuel starvation.
This was a response to someone with a similar problem. If the DTC P1298 is alone when performing code retrieval, replace the IDM; if other codes are present, diagnose them first.
A faulty IDM can cause driveablity concerns similar to a malfunctioning ignition module in a gas-powered vehicle. Under load it will seem as if the engine is starving for fuel. If you verify good fuel and oil delivery and pressure to the heads, and the Mass Fuel Desired, ICP, IPR and Fuel PW readings climb while the RPM's drop, suspect the IDM.

Let us know what the cure was!
