Mike with a 93 cummins
Hey, My name is Mike. I just bought a 1993 Cummins for really cheap ($3,000) last weekend so Im a week into diesel ownership. The truck is white with a Utility bed on it and at the moment it still has the letters from the construction company that ran it on the doors. Im joining Dieselbombers really because in all of my searches for information, I ended up here with the answers I was looking for so it seems that you guys know your stuff.
This is not only my first diesel, but also my first dodge (although I own a couple jeeps) so Im pretty fresh to just about every part of the truck. I have a good bit of experience with everything from the driveshafts down on a drivetrain, so I probably have that covered but Im definitely in for some learning when it comes to: from the T-case to the radiator.
Being that i only paid $3,000 for the truck, naturally its a tad worse for wear. Its interior needs some serious love (which is no big deal, ill work all that out) and the outside needs some light rust spots taken care of, but its pretty straight. Upon a shallow inspection by the Dodge dealership in town, it seems that the motor is in great shape, and everything else is doing fine but the tranny (which is an auto) might be beginning to have some issues. So ill probably be asking some transmission questions once I start getting to the point where I at least know whats going with it. Supposedly the transmission was rebuilt 75,000 ago (the truck has 277,000) but im learning that the seller might not be quite as reliable as I first thought, so realistically, I don't know.
At the moment, im just getting a few small things done that it needs (like some fluids changed and a battery) and trying to get to know the thing a little better, but being completely new to diesels, opening the hood; i might as well be looking at a rocket ship because I couldn't tell you hardly anything about the specifics of whats going on under there.
A little bit about me:
I grew up in Evanston Wyoming, and lived there until august 2009 when I moved to Riverton to attend College for the year. So for the school year I live up in Riverton, and last summer I lived down in West Jordan Utah for a job, and this summer it looks like Ill be living in Evanston again for a bit. Im an Manufacturing Engineering major with a Welding emphasis. I'v been welding since my sophomore year in high school and have now used my skills as a welder employed several different places. I own two 1988 Jeeps (a Cherokee Chief and a Comanche Chief) into which I pour most of my money and free time. The Comanche is my daily driver, and the Cherokee is my rock crawling, mud bogging, dune buggying, river fording, baja style racing, toy. Both jeeps are lifted (as I do some light wheeling with the Comanche as well) and I do 95% of my own work on them. As a welder, I naturally build my own parts (bumpers and other body armor) as well as building a custom front axle housing for my Cherokee recently. I am also getting into designing my own suspension systems like the double triangulated four link coilover system I run on my Cherokee. As I live a somewhat nomadic lifestyle, I have an enclosed cargo trailer as a shop; equipped with my welding supplies, a drill press, air compressor, lighting, and an 8 foot steel workbench etc. The trailer has become quite heavy (hence the purchase of a Cummins). I also do most of your typical Wyoming activities like shooting guns, riding dirtbikes and fourwheelers, camping, jeeping, and bonfire parties out in the boonies.
Anyway, thats me! feel free to ask any questions that you feel like, and I look forward to becoming a part of your community as well as learning about the beast I just bought.
