If you're on a budget, you can't beat the old 12 valve cummins engines.

Cummins all the way, i say that, not because i own one myself but because the 5.9 cummins is an industrial motor, made to last 300k+ miles. They were used for power generators and other things i'm sure. They are a stout motor dominating the sport of pulling and drag racing and easy to build, more performance parts than the others.

It depends on your power goal, budget and how much of the work you can do yourself. You can get 350-400hp out of an early VE-pumped 12V if you are mechanically inclined to mess with the injection pump, install injectors, turbo, etc. Probably under $2k dollars to do it right.

You can get the same out of a late commonrail for the cost of a $500 programmer.

But you might also need another couple/few grand in tranny upgrades to support it on either platform, if you've got the automatic. Definitely so with the early 727/A518s.

The 5.9 will give you plenty of HP & TQ and no DPF
