Default Pat - just an other guy with diesel trucks

Hi all,
I'm new here. But have been following some posting for a while.
I'm better with electronic and electric things but I'm not bad on mechanical things. I'm just sometime missing the correct info for my projects.

I like swap ideas and open source things. I dream of cars/trucks that I could totally build and fix with no technology non-sens (I was mad buying a 250$ wiper switch from Freighliner or 750$ part from Caterpillar). I believe with the Internet, regular people can share knowledge to make things better, simpler and cheaper, live freedom and escape corporate world pricing and road blocks.

I own a Freighliner FL-80 with 3124 cat and a 26feet box.
Also a F-450 with 6.0 diesel and a 16 feet box.

I have a non running Suburban 1995 with a 6.5 turbo. This is a project. I would like to run the engine standalone without the OEM electronic. I'm looking for a cheap (open source) ECU (maybe like MegaSquirt but for diesels). Also I would like to swap a modern 3.0 litter diesel like OM642 or BMW diesel engine into a gasoline SUV that I have. Again, controlling the ECU is the main issue.

Previously owned diesels:
MB 240D
1995 Chevy van with non turbo 6.5
FL-80 with Cummins 5.9
Kubota 50HP tractor
