Get a p-pumped 12 valve, i love mine
You don't have to go crazy with the hp at first. With the price of diesel today, i'll take the great fuel milage mine gives me over the hp right now. The hp increase is a long process i've been working on with mine over the years i've owned my truck.
And all cummins motors are intercooled.

 

cant go wrong with a 12v. they are hard to find (as with all 1st and 2nd gens) but once you find one that some jackass didnt beat to death its worth it!
