Well since I got my new wheels home. I replaced my fuel filter and changed the oil.
pulled the glow plugs out and did a compression test. got 400# on 2 through 6 and 375 on number one. plan on replacing the water pump, as I noticed that the bearing is toast.
the motor starts right up from cold but needs a little throttle for the firsrt few fer seconds.
it worries me a little that for the first minute or so the truck gets engulfed in smoke, and completely disappears in a cloud of unburned fuel vapor. I am afraid that some old biddy will phone in the fire dept.
I can't help but wonder if the injectors should be checked out.

The trans is a nv4500 5speed. fifth gear is non existent and the bearings make all kinds of noise, as well as the synchros which are shot too..

I guess I will pull the tranny and take it apart to get a parts list established.

this truck seems like it will be a big improvement over my old 82 3/4 ton 6.2
