Default Duramax Questions

Hey I just joined this a couple days ago because I decided i wanted to get a diesel truck. My only problem is I don't know much of anything about them and I am on a pretty tight budget.
My name is Matt, I'm 19 and currently going to school at a community college in TN. I work part time at the Sonic right down the road. (I got the job to flirt with the hot girls that work there =P). Right now I own a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 work truck. I plan on selling it and step up to a 2500. Right now I am lookin for a 2001-2004 because they are the ones in my price range of under 14k. I also want some quick power upgrades but I have learned that I can tear the hell outta my transmission if i'm not careful. I'd like to buy a suncoast stage 3 or 4 kit but i dont exactly have 2700 bucks lyin around. I figure i'll be able to afford it in about a year cuz I'm working at a crappy job and paying for school. But in the meantime is there anyway i can put some power into it for around 500 bucks? And is there a cheap way to help out with protecting my tranny from having problems with an increase of power?

Also I am currently looking at a 2001 2500 Duramax. I am going to the dealership soon to look at it but I'd like to find out if they make a Duramax that doesn't have a turbo because this one doesn't say if it is or not.

Bad news first, they don't make a Duramax (Isuzu Engine Company) without a turbo, or pretty much any diesel for that matter. Reason for that is because they were awful gutless without one. Now the good news!! You can get a power upgrade for >$500 and possibly up the MPG to boot w/ out damaging the transmission or the need for other upgrades right away .

Here's a little info on diesel engines and such!! This will help you get to understand the mechanics a little more.

Hey thanks to everyone!
yeah i'm glad they all come with turbo's. so that definately isn't bad news. And what exactly would be a >$500 upgrade? like an intake or like a programmer? I have a friend who has the edge juice with the attitude monitor on is 05 duramax and he likes it. so i was thinkin about going with that. plus i wouldn't have to buy gauges or anything...

I am not a big fan of the Edge, but that is just me. I would go with the PPE or the Predator.

There is a DIY for the intake mod, you do not need to buy an intake unless you just want too. I have one, but that is because I screwed mine up doing the mod.

if you want the most band four yer buck programmer, most of them them will make enough power to hurt the transmission eventually, but if you keep them at 70 or lower you shouldn't have a problem.

theres also little things like a boost increase valve that raises the boost to from the turbo keeping it in a safe level it only costs 30 bucks, you really dont need an intake, all they do is make the turbo more noticable. just modify the stock box.

exhaust there can be a few budget kits that can be bought from the vendors in a 4inch exhaust.

Incorrect...Its made by DMX LTD which is a General Motors company and not Isuzu. GM Engineers under the direction of a couple of contracted Isuzu Engineers developed the engine. Isuzu has nothing to do with it.
