Well that would make it an LML with the controversial CP4 pump. Thay have a higher failure rate then the CP3 but not that bad. Thay fail quickly with any contamination such as gas in the fuel.

Ether he was abusing it or he got a lemon. In any case, it does not mean the duramax is is junk or a bad engine. Far from it

2011-2015 have cp4 pump that are bad about coming apart and putting metal in the lines, fuel rail, and injectors. Have a 2012 in gm shop now waiting for a change out of all that is a complete package, under warranty. Truck has 88297 miles warranty for drive train goes to 100000 miles and end of next year. Gm service just needs the last 8 of vin. and mileage to look up if under warranty. out of warranty parts are 4500.00 and over 30 hours labor.

Did this pump being a cp4 ever explode by chance? Have you ever had problems with it?
