Question allison trans 5 to 6 speed question?

So as far as i know, 06 is when they started putting the 6 speed in the duramaxs. prior to that it was a 5 speed tranny. my question is, if i buy an aftermarket 6 speed automatic allison, will my truck just accept it? obviously i would have to do a pc reprogram cause the truck is use to 5 speed and not 6. But i guess what i really want to know is, is it do-able and how much am i talking price wise? I know the tranny is going to run in the ball park of 6 to 8 grand. i will do all the work myself, but when it comes to the pc, is there a programer i can purchase that will fix the trans settings?
