Default transmission upgrade time.

were lookin at buying a kit and rebuilding it ourself. and so my first question is how hard is it? and do we need alot of specialty tools for it?
second question which kit company is best?

were looking at doing some mild drag racing and we tow every so often. were looking at kits that are gonna hold up to 600 horse. Dont know if we'll ever get tehre but i dont want to risk anything i want plenty of room to wiggle and never have to worry about it.

so any help would be appreciated

PPE makes a 850 hp kit, comes with everthing you will need parts wise, including the Torque Coverter. As for special tools, i think as long as you have a very decent set of tools should be fine. me i have a small arsonal, maybe 100 to 200 different tools, and i think i can get the job done. but i also am an aircraft mech, so if i dont have the tools, some of my buddies do or i can swing by work and pick up a few. But also far as i know as long as you have something to lower the tranny and lift the truck you should be good. all it is, is a gasgut, the mounting bolts, and then the rest is all just plates and clutchs, and they all just stack in the tranny in sequence.

For an allison really the only special tools you will need you can actually make. You will need a big compressing tool for i believe its the c3 and c5 clutches. I have some pictures on my computer at home and i will put them up if you want some allison tear down pics.

Yeah the PPE Stage 4 and 5 are a really nice kits and hold up really well and for the price with convertor isnt bad at all. The best thing to do IMO if you are going to do the trans yourself is get on ebay and order the allison 1000 manual for like 20 bucks it a nice little thing to have

Sorry it took so long to get these up i totally forgot to put them up when i said i would. They are just some blow up pictures. They arent necessarily the best tear down pictures in the world. I wish i would have went step by step and took them for a write up but i didnt think that far ahead when i did this. If you want bigger pictures just let me know and ill upload them through photobucket.
