Simple, the oil pump in the t-case mates to the rear cover. There is a retaining clip that is suppose to help take out any slack in the oil pump mounting area, the pump will actually move just enough to rub right through the clip. Once the clip is rubbed through it begins to rub through the rear case. You will get a small hole on the outside of the case and you will loose all of your t-case fluid. It usually only takes a few hundred miles to completely empty the t-case and run it dry, causing a lot of damage. Some are lucky enough to spot the leak early and fix the problem, some are not so lucky and will have to replace the entire case.

there are fixes for this too, Mike L and Eric Merchant make them, but it involves removed the transfer case and taking the back cover off to replace one part with a better one and putting it all back together.
