Default Allison Transmission Swap???

Allison Transmission Swap???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello everone,

I have some serious decisions to make. I have transmission issues and am consdiering purchasing a used transmission and instaling it. How difficult is it to swap an Allison tranny into one of our trucks? I have done dozens of 700r4's by my self. Is this a job I can do by my self???

I absolutely LOVE my 2001 Duramax 2500 Silverado....I love it! She has 240 K miles on her, Injectors replaced @ 170K miles, fuel injection pump was recently replaced.

A few months ago I started having issues with my tranny. I was driving home from work and when I got off the freeway slowing to a stop, the transmission would act as if it had a massive tranny brake under 8mph and chrup. I thought...HUH????? shifted fine, maybe a little soft, but nothing concerning. As I was stoping at stop signs on my way home I was able to reproduce this chrup while coming to a stop 4 times. I went home, reset my computer with my stealth 2 programer to stock and transmissin too.... The problem resolved itself for 2 months.

Recenlty, what has been going on is that I do not get the chrup so much when I slow to a stop. Now what is going on is when I come to a stop, the truck seems to go in to Neutral while the gear selector is in drive. The truck kind of seems to have a mind of it's own. I stop and then when I try to accelerate, the rpms go up and then it slams into gear @ aprox 1500rpms. Not too violent, but it is not normal.

What I have done to resolve this was that I changed my fluid and filters and added some Lucas oil. No change right away from the fluid and filter swap. After I drove it for a while.....50 miles, it stopped acting funny and does not go into N when I come to a stop. I also added some transMedic fuild to my transimssion. I was told this would help clean the torque converter and valve body? Who knows...snake oil, but I wanted to remedy the issue incase I decided to trade her in at a stealership. I reset the computer from my 50hp setting and transmision setting back to stock just to be safe. Now, my truck is running fine???

I'm really torn on what I am going to do.

I have considered purchasing a used allision tranny with 100K miles on her from Craigslist. The owner said it has a cracked tail shaft and is why he replaced it with a 2005 transmission. As much work to swap tranny's, I ask myself...why did he not just swap tail shafts & also wonder if there is something else wrong with the tranny? it's been in drystorage eversice it has been removed.

Two other options;
Rebuild the tranny for 4K on a truck that has 240K miles or trade it in on a ford F350 with 100K less miles than mine and the ford has a rebuilt transmission and converter.

I am TORN if I shoud trade my truck in on a truck with 100K miles less and new transmission or if I should take the risk and keep my truck and swap the tranny my self.

How hard will it be for someone to swap out the allison himself?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

ANYONE??? Anyone here ever done an allison transmission swap? How can I conquer this project?

Does the truck not have an Allison at this time? Would it not be a direct swap? If so, super easy. If not, Allison swaps are costly, and typically don't work out the best. I though about doing it myself until I researched it and started asking questions.
