1993 6.5 cooling problem

ok well explain to me why does t-stat opens at 180degree when it is a 195degree . Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I own a 24 hr truck and trailer repair shop and roadservice in Atlanta and have been in business for 12 years and do all dealers roadservice (freightliner, KW, and pete) and yes 220 - 240 is to hot but I am here to tell if the T-stat says 195 it will run 195 on average and if pulling a load it will generally run about 3-5 degrees warm do to load and turbo boost more than average . and yes I have flushed several time and got rid of junk dex-cool but waste gate not working proper on mine due to actuator switch at fault and will be fix asap just found this about 3hours ago. so rember what i said with dex-cool and your truck still has that and has not been converted that yes u do have corrosion because thats what dex- cool does

and fan will spin alittle freely due to age if fan puts a load on engine after 195 degree well yes it is working , but if you spin and it just spin then will over heat at a idle. This is my fouth 6.5 td and all still on road making me money but yes these are trucks that needs repaired weekly . but have to love them or they will hate you.

Hello JGG. Let me break some of these questions you have down for you a little bit. Hopefully I can be of some help. I too own and run my own automotive shop and have been for 5 years but my expertise is in gasoline engines. I'm still learning diesels but learning very quickly.
Your first question about the thermostat...it's possible, if it's opening up at 180* and your saying it's supposed to be 195* that they gave you the wrong thermostat. A thermostat works by using mercury inside the thermostat to open and close the plunger. If your saying it's opening up at 180* then simply buy another one.
Second if you have a 195* thermostat then yes...it will open at 195*.
Thirdly anytime you have a load on the engine your temps will go up regardless. More full, more air, more turbo spool etc. equals more heat which equals higher temps. However a properly functioning cooling system will compensate for this. A few degrees hotter is nothing to worry about. When you start hitting 10* + I would raise an eyebrow. If your really concerned about temps that much then start using WaterWetter in your system. It does a great job in reducing engine temps.
Lastly fan clutches are made to spin but with about 82% drag or resistance if you will. The fan clutch should be able to move but not without some effort. If you can spin it and it does more then a 1/4 revolution...it's garbage and needs replacing. It should feel still when you spin it.
SIDE NOTE: DEX-COOL = TRASH
So I hope this helps and if you have any other Q's then let me know and I'll try and help the best I can.

I don't know who you are JGG but the sarcasm isn't needed. My temps even on a hot day stay at about 180-189* according to my infrared electronic temperature gun. Oh but I'm sure you being such a good mechanic and an owner of an automotive shop yourself already have one of these tools yourself too. As far as big boy toys...get real man. What kind of person discourages another person? Oh...that kind of person. I know I am still learning even after being in business successfully for over 5 years with my own automotive shop and a mechanic for over 16 years but no one knows everything. Apparently if you knew everything you would'nt be asking questions yourself. I realize I am a small fish in a big pond for now and still learning a lot about diesels but be encouraging and helpful not mean and ignorant. Remember eventually small fish grow up and become bigger fish too so dont try and discredit me because it really makes you look bad. I am trying to help this guy with his cooling problems not get into a battle with you so please do the guy who started this thread a favor and keep it on point. Thank you for your time.

FYI just to give a knowledgeable advise computers on these have to read at least 190degree to register correct @ full operational temp and if you not getting there then you simply looseing power. I have 5 other techs that agree. by the way I don't own a Automotive shop Try a Diesel repair shop !!!!!!!!!!!! not being sarcatic till you did so come on down here to Atlanta and let me teach you a thing or two so you can have more knowledge in the diesel feild!!!! be more than happy to help. Thats what we do down here simply good southern hospitality

And now back to helping the original poster. For every question on here there is a dozen different answers and every one of them could be right. Instead of competing with each other to prove who is the bigger expert, just give your advice and let the original poster learn something from all of it.
Sometimes in simple disscussion we all learn new things. Thats why were here, is to trade ideas, expeiances and know how.
