Default Changing front brakes on 8 lug 6.5

When I went to change my brakes was surprised how few write-ups I could find. I'm just gonna give a summary of what I had to do to change my brakes. Since this truck is a 95 suburban 4x4 2500 8600lb 8 lug the hub is in front of the rotors and to change the rotors you will have to remove the hub.

First, remove the vanity covers from the wheels (if you have them) and break the lock for the lug nuts. By that I mean just loosen them enough that the wheels won't spin when the truck is in the air. The same needs to be done to the axel nut. It's a large nut in the middle of the hub (its a 36mm socket). Jack the car up on both sides and place your stands on the proper mounting points. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels. Next, you'll need to remove the calipers. There are just two bolts on either side with rubber covers. You can use the proper sized allen wrench or just use vise grips. Tie the calipers well out of the way. Leaving them hanging can cause the brakes hoses to collapse on the inside and freeze your brakes up.

Now, there should be the rotors exposed with the hub covering the middle parts that sticks out on the rotors. Take a small block of wood and a mallet and knock out the wheel studs. There is a opening where you can fish them out where the caliber used to be. I recommend rotating the hub so it lines up with the opening for each stud you knock out.

You'll need to disconnect the abs sensor. There is a wire that runs from the hub to the top left of the wheel well. Follow that wire until you get to the connector and disconnect the sensor.

Now, you can remove the hub assembly. Remove the lug nut in the middle (the 36mm nut). Behind where the hub is connected to the spindle there are 4 15mm bolts. Remove the bolts and you should be able to pull the rotor and hub out from the axle. If you aren't sure what these parts are the spindke is what the piece of metal between the upper and lower control arms. The hub spins the rotors and on the other end is bolted on to the spindle.

Once you've removed the hub and rotor you separate the hub from the rotors. I think I had to tilt the rotors from the hub and remove the abs sensor and fish it back through when putting the new rotors on. The sensor is held in place by a 5 Allen wrench bolt. Place the new rotors on the hub. Make sure your careful with the abs sensor or else you'll have to do this all over again to replace the sensor.

This is the fun part, fish the the 15mm bolts back in the spindle and try to line up the hub to the bolts. While doing this you'll have to make sure the dust guard stays in place between the hub and the spindle. Also, make sure the abs wire fishes through the right way behind the dust cover. If you leave the wire exposed it could rub and again youll have to do this all over.

After you tighten all of the 15mm bolt you can hand tighten the axel nut. Compress the caliper then remove the old pads. If the calipers wont compress just go buy another one they are only $23 at autozone. Put new pads on and place the caliper back and tighten the two bolts. Put the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts as much as you can before the wheel spins. Drop the truck back down and tighten the axel nut and lug nuts. Don't over tighten the lug nuts or you'll strip the studs.

Hope this helps. let me know if you have any problems on your project and ill try to help. Sorry for the oversimplification for everything but thats the way I would have liked it if I was using this post to change my brakes.
