If it starts to get air in the fuel supply the optical sensor in the i/p flips out. You could try unplugging the optical sensor and seeing how the truck runs.
The pump is around $1000. The life span varies. I know some people that don't get any life out of them and some get a few 100k out of them. The problem with fuel cleaner is it can clean every thing before the injection pump and wash it right down to the optical sensor.

I have in the mean time checked the fuel pump mounted on the frame rail and it is working, The Black smoke does not come all the time only when I get on it hard and then it only lasts for a few seconds then I go to no smoke at all. I have also changed the fuel filter. Would a bad or failing ip cause a power loss at all times? I pull a trailer quite a bit and I now have to use another truck because this one falls on it's face even with an empty trailer.

yes it is very possible the i/p is out. Start the truck up and get it to operating temp. Slowly rev the engine to 2000rpm hold it there for a little while then slowly back off of it. It should be able to rev smoothly, hold rpm and return to idle smooth. If it can not there is a good chance the i/p is bad.
