Default How to read codes

When you check engine light comes on how are you supposed to read the codes to find the problem? Is there a way to do it at home? Truck started to have a miss every so often yesterday and the light came on. I have a new PMD and relocation kit that I am putting on today so hope that fixes it. But I really want to know what the codes are. The other thing is once you get the code numbers not they need to be translated is there a place to do that also? Thanks for any help.

Default How to read codes for OBD1

1. Locate ADL port below dash.

2. Insert paperclip or similar wire. (see photo)

3. KOEO (Key On Engine Off) watch SES light.

4. SES (check engine) light will blink out codes. It will flash, then short pause, then flash again, then long pause between codes. Example: flash, (pause), flash, flash (long pause) is code12 for no RPM. This code is always present.

Example 2: Flash, flash, flash (pause) flash, flash, flash, (long pause) = code 33. The computer will continue to scroll through the codes and generally begins and ends with 3 code 12's, with important codes being shown in between.

truck is running great now. I put the new PMD on and a #9 resistor the truck runs like new. I always wondered if all the chevy diesels were slugs or what. The PMD must have been failing for a while. I also put a heavier spring on after confirming tha gauges were accurate and now am geting 11 psi WOT and 13-14 at a peak. The only thing now is the 2.5" cross over pipe that I have to install. Hopefully gas mileage goes up a bit for me. Thanks for the help gonna check the codes now.
