New member. 6.5 TD too much smoke! help!
from everything i have read today alone im almost certain its a gm8. still wont be 100% sure untill i have solid proof of that. i know for fact its a gm series turbo and has 500 miles on it. also read that my knock could be caused by alot of other things as well. i cant remember the correct abbreviation but i think my white smoke is cause by the PCV ( whatever the diesel term/ version of that is ) being dirty. the truck had the white smoke issue before the motor swap. im pretty much coming up with a huge list of things that can cause these problems and being lead to belive now that its a combonation of problems rather than just one.
It will say on the front of the turbo what number it is. You are probably making more boost because of the ecm not the turbo. The pcv is a cdr on a 6.5 I doubt it is the problem it usually just causes excessive blow by. As far as the knock if it is not a lose bottom end or something mechanically broke and I don't know what would cause a come and go knock. The only thing I can think of is a injector. An injector will cause both a knock that can come and go and white smoke. I would highly doubt it is to do with the turbo unless it blow a head gasket but at 18 psi with head studs I wouldn't put money on that. I have seen them handle more than that stock.
i thought i read somewhere that the cdr would cause white smoke? i also read the injection pump itself can cause a come and go knock, along with a harmonic balancer and a few other things. i have yet to mess with it, i need to borrow the tech2 tomorrow.
well it made a huge difference in sound and performance what ever it is. ok so the harmonic balancer is off the list of things to check along with the TC bolts. im pretty convinced it is in the fuel system. it just doesnt make sence that those injectors are already effed up. yes they are the crappy marine injectors but still. now to do the whole loosen an injector line one at a time to check them trick is there any suggestions on how to do this prosses step by step? the fact that there should be 1800 psi behind them makes me a little nervouse about taking those lines loose while its running. also, will my stock 6.2 injectors work in my 6.5 and would it even be worth it? or should i just buy new ones? im a little tight on cash after forking out the money to buy this thing.
If its a tall 6.2 injector you have to adjust the lines. The only other problem you may have running 6.2 injectors if everything else is the same is you may not run at optimum capability . I have head of the cheap injectors failing wright off the bat. If you put marine injectors made by Bosch you shouldn't have a problem but I would just go stock.
The pressure behind the injector should make you a little nervous. Wear safety glasses and keep your fingers out of the way. Just start it up and crack the line lose at the injector. You will probably only be able to check the driver side because the turbo gets in the way on the other side.

no way its a boost leak. boost leak is very rare in a 6.5 truck without a intercooler because the intake manifold is hooked up directly to the turbo with one sleeve and two heavy duty clamps. only way it is a boost leak is if the clamps are loose or intake gasket blew which almost never happen
