grinding noise when cranking. a peice of the starter casing is broken between the bolts but wont fall out.

did i bottom out on something ? the front drive shaft and pumpkin is pretty much below it so how could it get hit . how long could it last

 

If the brace that supports the end of it isn't in place, nose cone failure is fairly quick.

The brace will be bent to bolt to the side of the block. I had to fix a block because the brace was left off on one. It is very important it is on there If the brace is on and tight the only thing's I can think of are.
The stater needs to be shimmed out. The engine kicked back on the stater and broke it.
Or it was just a bad casting.

 

thanks budget low so im gonna try to jb weld it or drill and tap some screws to hold it for now
