tightening steering on a chevy steering box

Default tightening steering on a chevy steering box

alright i got my steering box out of a 97 1 ton 2wd silverado. my is truck is straight axles

i have a brand new pitman arm, tie rod, drag link, all new ends everywhere with full high steer, everything BRAND NEW. and ive double and triple checked everything is tight nothing is loose. but when im driving about 40MPH + and im making a sharper turn on a windy road, i gotta crank the wheel a full half turn to make the turn.

i know it isnt slop because my wheel is very tight and there is no side to side play with the wheel. it just seems like it isnt all that responsive. does anyone know if you can tighten up the play in these steering boxes like some of the older ones did? like with a star wheel or something? thanks

its off the same generation trucks and the reason why all the 4x4 guys use the 2wd boxes and because they have a tighter turning radius and they have drop pitman arms available. the chevys dont. theyre both out of silverados from the same generation i cant imagine that being the problem

i have no idea. did the manufactuer put the wrong gears in by accident? just a shot in the dark.

i wouldnt think so. i drove the truck that the box came out of it was one of my delivery work trucks and it didnt really have the problem at all. ive heard you can tighten then with a starwheel deal but i havent even done one before

not shure on the later boxes, but there should be a jam nut with a Allen type set screw on the top just undo the jam nut and titen down the screw just till it titens up the steering. not 100 percent for shure on the 97 tho. that how i adjust the one on my 91 s-10 drag turck

i thought that screw just adjusts the preload on some of the internals from what ive read. from what i recall reading, that will mess things up if you adjust it and its only used upon assembly to load everything correctly?
