Default 1986 6.2l suburban starts and idles but will only go about a block before surging, sta

Ok, im new to this forum and fairly new to diesels so any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
2 days ago my truck started loosing power while on the highway and when I stepped on the pedal it would start to big down. It finally stalled when I got off of the highway but I was able to get it started again. It was lulling and not staying at idle when I would come to a stop. It died about 3 more times but would start back up fairly easy. I got it home and let it sit the night. Determined yesterday that the lift pump on the engine was not working so it was replaced with a new one. When I finished, I primed the fuel back to the rails using the method of unplugging the 12v red line to the ip and cranking in several short installments, then reconnecting it and cracking 2 of the injector lines. I was able to get it to start up and stay idle for 10-15 minutes. It throttled pretty good. I opened the bleeder at the top of the filter block on the firewall to possibly bleed anymore air from the system, ( I've read many forums and articles stating it takes a lot to get the air completely out of the system, so figured it wouldn't hurt) when I opened the bleeder the truck would not only not produce fuel but it actually would bog down and die. Did this 3-4 times thinking it would help bleed it. Each time, the truck would start back up on the 1st or second try, taking about 8-10 seconds of cranking. I then let it idle for about 5-8 minutes and figured I would drive it to the parts store and get a new filter (my current thinking is that the filter may be clogged or defect?). Well, I made it about 2 blocks to a stop sign where when I stopped, it lost power, surged, then died. I pulled it back to the house and I am now charging the batteries, they are dead due to me cranking the crap out of it for about 5 minutes after it stalled out at the stop sign. I feel like the batteries should have held a better charge but for some reason they died out pretty quick. Their only about 6 months old. My question is this, am I in the right direction thinking it's a bad fuel filter causing this or could this be my alternator? Nothing else was running on the truck while it was idling for quite a wial before I decided to leave to the parts store so I don't know why my batteries went dead so quick and if there's no fuel coming out of the filter bleeder on the top but the truck would stay running fine at idle, why? Again sorry for the book and thanks for any help.
