starting and shifting problems - looking for a good diesel mechanic
Anyone know of a good diesel mechanic in Montgomery County, Maryland or nearby?
I have a 1993 6.5 4wd turbo diesel and I am having problems with it going into limp mode and starting.
Here is what I have done so far:
1. Replaced the 4L80E transmission because the previous transmission was not going into gear so I thought it was the transmission. I got it replaced with a 4L80E transmission that was sitting around for 7 years, but the guy said it was good, guaranteed it and installed it in the truck for me.
2. After I got back the truck it would not shift out of first gear, so I check the codes and figured out that the TPS signal was going haywire. So I replaced the TPS. I didn’t check the voltages to/from the TPS after installing since I didn’t want to pierce the new wires. The truck started and ran, but would not shift into OD.
3. Now I am having starting problems. When I first start the truck it was start after a few cranks, but after driving it for half hour or more, it takes a good few minutes before it starts.
4. The fuel pump was not working, so I replaced it, but found out that the OPS was not good so I replaced that and I can hear the fuel pump crank up now when I am cranking the engine. I didn’t hear it in the last few days, but that may be because I am used to it coming on now.
5. As of recently the truck shut off a couple times when I stopped at a light. Good thing it restarted.
6. A few times the truck would not accelerate beyond 30 MPH and I was crawling back home.
7. On another occasion the truck would not start for about half hour after I turned it off, then I cranked it and started. Seems as though the truck has to be a certain temperature or at least cooled down to start.
8. So I have a few problems, one is that the truck will not start sometimes, shuts off sometimes, and it would not shift into OD now and seems to not have power to pull anything.

A no start hot can result from a worn out IP.
Next time no start hot occurs test IP by pouring water over the IP and then starting,if starting improves IP needs replaced/rebuilt.
AC Delco ONLY for OPS replacement, aftermarket OPS fail very quickly if not bad right out of the box.
Also google "OPS relay mod" and install for long term reliability.
Trans shifting problem out of my area of expertise.

Thanks racer. I was out of town this weekend so didn't have have time to check on it. Also, I never know if I am going to be able to get it back home when I take it out. But will be testing it out this weekend again.
Will try the water on IP and will also look for the AC Delco Ops.
Need to search for the mods.
