1995 chevy k2500 6.5 very hard to start now.

Been having trouble with my truck and the following have been done.

1. Rebuilt IP
2. new filter
3. new glow plugs
4 new sending unit in tank
5. new fuel lines
6. lift pump is working
7. No air in lines that I can see
8. IP timing was set by local shop
9. new pmd

I am sure I have done some other things but cant think of them right now.

I was having a lot of codes and stalling while running and that has cleared up but now it is terrible to get started when cold. will try to start and die after cranking, will only try to run for a few seconds.. will do this a dozen times and then will suddenly start. truck seems to run good after started, but I have not driven it to much because I am unsure if when I stop it will decide not to start again.

batteries seem Ok, and I have tried charging them overnight but still starts very hard. seem to turn over good.

Could IP still be out of time, bad IP maybe, bad injectors . Any suggestions would be appeciated.

 

Get them batteries load tested guessing they are okay and knowing are 2 different things,Most big chain auto parts stores test them for free or you can get a decent load tester from Harbor Freight $30 it's a good thing to have in a tool box.

 

Will get them tested also, also ordered one from harbor freight for $19.99.

Also forgot to mention that once truck starts I can go ahead and shut it off as soon as it starts and it will fire right back up.

 

Sounds like too slow a cranking speed and/or low compression?

Have the injectors ever been rebuilt or replaced?
They are a maintenance item and need swapped out about every 100,000 miles.
A poor spray pattern will sure affect starting.

Also have you checked for power at each and every glow plug when they cycle?
They all have fusible links that can burn out as well as each bank of glows has it's own fusible link also.

As for glow plugs-what brand did you install?

Are you starting the truck properly?
I mean do you crank the starter over as soon as the glow light goes out the first time like you are supposed to,or are you waiting for it to stop flashing altogether?

if you wait for it to stop completely-the glows will have already cooled off too much to help with starting.
the additional flashes of the glow light are afterglow and are meant to happen when the engine is already running.

As for the batteries,they must be 750 CCA minimum and should be load tested separately.

Did the shop who set the timing tell you what the TDCO value is now?
What is it?
Late timing makes for harder starts and longer cranking.
