Default Hard starting....

Hey guys, new to the diesel world. Bought a 1995 1 ton dually, which I love but I'm having trouble starting. I can crank it all day long and it won't start. But if I push the gas peddle halfway to the floor, she fires right up. Is this normal? I've always been told that you don't feed the fuel on an injected engine. Is this a problem I need to worry about. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your lift pump might be dead. Try cracking the bleeder screw on the fuel filter and turning the key. If fuel is coming out while the glow plugs are heating thats not the problem.

Not quite right.

The LP is powered by the relay during cranking and by the oil pressure switch once the engine is running on 95 and older models.

A bad LP circuit in the OPS is a very common failure that makes the LP appear dead but is just not recieving power while the engine is running.
The OPS relay mod is highly pushed to take the load off the OPS and make it last the lifetime of the truck-AC Delco OPS ONLY!

To the OP:
Get the truck scanned for codes and report the code #'s here please.

Yours is a unique condition theat might be explained by the electronic throttle if it's throwing codes, but not sure?

Ok the process you describe with the LP operating during the glow cycle is OBDII only and available on 96-2000 trucks.

It can however be done with the OPS relay mod I posted that adds a prime cycle to 95> trucks.

Thanks for the info. I don't have a code reader so I'll have to get one. Do I get the ODB I or II?
Anybody have brand preference?

95 is OBD1 so you can check codes with a paperclip and the check engine light.
google paperclip code check.
