Default 1996 6.5 Thermostat Crossover Pipe

I have a 1996 6.5 diesel. In 96 GM had a single thermostat in the engine. A few days ago I was changing the thermostat on my truck and the darned thermostat housing (crossover pipe) cracked while I was changing said thermostat. My problem is GM has discontinued this crossover piping so buying a new one is not an option. I hate the thought of laying out money for a used one that could end up breaking. I see that in 1997 GM went to a dual thermostat system. I'm wondering if I can upgrade to the dual thermostat system without having to make major modifications on my engine? Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Should be no problem changing to the dual stat and new upper rad hose.

96 was a transition year, early models had single stat and low flow water pump while mid production forward got the dual stat and high flow pump.
