Backfiring don't sound right to me-the only way a back fire can happen is if an intake valve is open during a compression or power stroke when they should be closed.
If you can figure out another way for an intake valve to be open when it should be shut I am all ears.
A broken valve spring that has broken very close to the first coil will still hold the valve shut until speeds get to high and valve float occurs.
If a plastic rocker arm retainer broke,2 nearby rockers could interfere with each other and with how noisy these engines are it is unlikley you would hear anything-you should notice a miss though.
A stuck open EGR valve could also have a symptom like a backfire if exhaust pressure got high enough.

A bent or cracked valve could be part of the problem?
I can't hear the noise so I can't come up with any ideas outside of what you describe the problem to be?

Filler tube as in where the fuel cap goes?
A plugged cap vent can cause lots of running problems-miss or fishbite might be 1 of them.
