For power:
Replace the flat panel air filter with the the stock K-47 round air cleaner from 98+ trucks.
Replace the stock exhaust with a Diamond Eye exhaust system.
Get the ECM prom reprogramed with a better tune.
Have the IP timing set to a TDCO value of -1.94,requires a tech 1,tech 2 with OBD1 expansion module or GMTD ScanTech to do a TDCO relearn.
Change the stock turbo to an ATT or HX40
Do the feed the beast mod available from Walking J Deseigns

For reliability:
Relocate the PMD to an area outside the underhood area on a heatsink with an extension harness(be sure the PMD resistor is installed in the PMD)
Do the OPS relay mod
get an EGT and boost gauge installed,a post filter/pre IP fuel pressure gauge is also a good idea

Address the cooling system as well:
Clean cooling stack spotless
AC Delco T stats only!
Kennedy special calibration fan clutch with a 20" steel fan or Dmax fan.
96-99 130gpm water pump for direct replacement or 99+ water pump and Heath Diesel fan clutch and fan.

DO NOT under any circumstances roll coal/black smoke with a 6.5,it is in now way like a cummins and rolling smoke will melt down the pistons if done.

Stacks would be fine, but you can't come straight off each manifold-the crossover pipe has to stay to help run the turbo.

You would have to split the exhaust after the turbo.

Your wife has got you beat by a long shot! No way you will ever blow any more soot then a cummins or should I say waste more fuel cause thats what black smoke is, unburnt fuel.

Remember, the 6.5 is a light duty diesel not a medium duty like the cummins.

Since you have OBDI you can get a 3 or 6 switchable on the fly tune, a 4in exhaust and bigger turbo for starters.

These 6.5s put out decent power with the right mods but will never be like a cummins.

Pour 10 gallons of waste oil on a dozen old tires in your truck bed and you will roll coal.
Smoke comes with power, but not in 6.5. If you have black smoke your turbo is not operating correctly.
