Question 6.5 Lack of acceleration

Hey there.
I have a 1999 GMC Suburban 2500 with the 6.5. The truck has no problems accelerating 95% of the time, but every once in a while, after driving it for a little while, the truck seems sluggish on acceleration, and it starts to smoke. This problem doesn't always happend. I can drive the same route every day, and the problems doesn't happen everyday. I have changed/put in a bigger air filter within the last 1000km, so the truck should be getting enough air.
If anyone has had this problem, or willing to offer up suggestions, anything would be appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance!

No, I don't have anything to do that with. Maybe i'll swing by my local shop tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Anything I can check without codes?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I was reading on another thread about pulling codes with a paperclip!?! Is this a legitimate way of doing it?

96+ is OBDII and a scanner must be used for code retrieval.
95> is OBD1 abd a paper clip and SES light can give codes.

Your 98 falls in the scanner only range.
Note if a code reader only is used,wright down the code #'s and ignore the description for now-manny scanners don't give the proper description for the 6.5 codes,but here they are:
OBD II codes for FAQs 96 and later model years
<DIR>

ODB II Diagnostic codes OBDII compliant reader required to access codes.

Not all codes show as "hard codes" that light the SES light, some are stored in the history as discrete faults</DIR>
