96 gmc diesel dump
hey guys im buying a new 1ton and came across this 96 gmc its a nice truck inside and out.. my question is what should i look for motor wise on these 6.5 diesel iv herd that the ip suck and are always blowing .and that some computer is always burning out.. how would i be able to tell either or...The reason im asking is the guy only wants 3k for the truck there has to be somehting wrong with it. from what ive see the truck looks brand new recent paint top to bottom 4x4 9' fisher mm2 plow, he sais he been trying to sell for a few weeks now but no takers!!.. any input on this truck would be greatly apreceiated!!
Thanks

The PMD is the issue only as long as they are still located under the hood still bumper mounted is the optimal place keep in mind the 6.5 is decent power exellent fuel milage type of engine and the IP are no worse than any other Diesel MY buddy has 495K on his 94 6.5 all orignal except the relocated PMD

Only if he wants the headaches that come with a conversion; I prefer to fix what was broke vs taking on a whole nother level of broken when it happens with a conversion, even with the venerable Cummins engine; that is generally always surrounded by an inferior truck

For 3K if body is in as good a shape as you say you could part it out and get your coins back, I love it when folks that don't know their azz from a hole in ground denigrate the 6.5, it keeps the purchase price low.
Does it run at all ??? if not use that and fact it has been on market weeks with no takers to your advantage, IPs themselves rarely go bad, usually the PMD module on the side of it is the problem, a new IP is about $1100 remans for 1/2 that, used but good IPs for about $300.
Worst case scenario blown engine about $3500 to replace yourself if you do the work, provided no major problems found, new engine long block for about $5-7K.
Were it near me I'd be looking hard at that one to pull my GN & backhoe (18K) with, vs pulling with my K1500 to be "legal" & capable vs capable only.

Generally not a thrust bearing tht wear but the armature in the fuel solenoid breaks and causes runaway, to get it recalibrated after disassembly can be a bitch, drivers can also cause it, but more often it is proken armature stud runaway is not common either way, another possibility is a bad APP module,. is this a general question or an issue you are currently working through ?
