Hey dave what brand of CPS did you install ??was it a BWD brand ?? if so remove it from the truck and get your money back and get a AC/Delco brand or a Napa CPS I had a bad experience earlier this year with BWD they arent up to snuff so to speak I installed a Napa brand in my 6.5 and I never have looked back hope this helps

I don't frequent here much as I do the truck stop (actually almost never) to know where timing is you need a bi-directional scan tool to read/change timing I use the old MT2500 scan tool.

What yr truck as OBD-I is different from OBD-II ko-ko learn is not available on OBD-I I & a few others made a detailed diagnostic guide at TTS I won't hot link to as I'm not trying to steal thunder from this site.

IP gear or the 3 IP housing external bolts, neither of which singly being loose would cause of timing setting loss. Incorrect time setting could be an issue following IP swap if shop did not know what they were doing, I see from my last post yours is a 96 OBD-II so ko-ko is way to start the leran if ECT is above 170F and you have no stored codes in the PCM, any those are the permissives to enable a ko-ko.

That in itself may be a good thing because if you did not get ko-ko activated then you are running on the stored timing values of last IP which is fine so long as replscement IP was installed reasonably close to where old one removed was.

You said engine ran away ??? Several fail modes could maybe cause it most common of which is broken fuel solenoid armature in the IP. You said in previous diagnostics shop tried a new IP ?? did they leave it on, was it a new IP or a "used but supposedly good IP".

Could be PMD related but runaway with those not common, also rarer still is bad APP module asking for max fuel, when PMD & APP go bad you usually ge a no/erratic start (PMD)or a limped max fuel (APP).

Have you been through the entire gnd system diagnostics more than just the battery gnd, multiple gnds to notice, I cant copy paste the file from TTS it simply is too large to inport, reason I aske you are showing high IAT & other sensor issues that fault when gnds are dirty, may not be the whole proble but need to be eliminated to have best trouble shooting success. IM TD over at TTS as well.

The one that really causes most oddball readings is pass side rear head intake manifold stud, the gnds there go to the PCM those get dirty and all sorts of weird stuff happens, like no start, I've not seen a runaway from that gnd being dirty since playing in Jurassic Park dinosaur diesel land in 2000 when I got my 1st one; but who knows, trons are a funny thing sometimes

Thanks for the replies.

Mayhem, the part I used is a Flight Systems piece from Pensacola Diesel.

TD, I did get the KOKO activated. TDC offset was originally at 0.0, I activated KOKO relearn, ECT was approx 180, cleared DTCs. P1214 set, TDCO went to +2.49 as read by the snap-on verus.

It's unknown whether the IP was a "known good" or brand new. All I know is that they tried a different one, and when that didn't solve the problem, they put the old one back on.

I'll head over to TTS and look for the ground diagnostics list, I think I've seen it before. I'll also fill out the troubleshooting checklist.

Thanks again, guys!

+2.49 is why you have the code problem thathat is full scale retarded timing -.25 to -.75 is the factory timing spec -1.5 to -1.95 is wher you go for a little more advanced timing/performance we can discuss more when you call. Also if using a Snap On Versus tool I'm not sure if the TDCO display is accurate I've never used that one, my MT2500 also wonky in the TDCO # displayed but I compared it vs a GM Tech II so I know what the error offset is when using the MT2500 vs GM Tech II.
