Default Need Help with Touchpad Problem

My touchpad doesn't work when I first power up, have to use the external mouse to click onto the password box, or I wouldn't be able to get in to my computer. I noticed this the last few times I turned it on.
Does anyone know what happened, or where I'd go to make it not lock the touchpad on shutdown--not sure that's what it's doing, but that's my guess..

Thanks for any help!

I did google it, all the info I could find wasn't for the touchpad not working only on start up/log on, so I thought I'd check if anyone might have had it happen, and know how to fix it.

OK, hopefully someone will chime in. Everybody's in The Badlands bashing Rustin.

It helps to know what kind of computer, too.

If it's an HP, goto their support page and just download the driver for your model. I had an issue with Windows Update screwing up my sound driver and had to reload it from HP's site, then disabled the update for it so it wouldn't do it again.

It's a dell. I am thinking it might be something with the settings for shut down, but don't know where to find them to check. I have been pretty busy and didn't have a chance to look at it last night.

Check the settings for the Alps touchpad driver. I think Dell still uses it for most of their laptops.

I don't think its the driver, i checked it, and i tried to update it and it's the latest version.

I think it might be this: My external mouse is a logitech, and in the settings/pref's the click box for "Allow this device to start computer" (or something like that) is checked. Ive done some searching around and I think this box being checked disables the touchpad and keyboard from starting the computer. It seems most people don't want them to start it as it can wake computer from sleep accidentally and wear down the battery.

I haven't tried unclicking it yet, cuz I'm trying to confirm that this being checked is why the touchpad locks. I want to be sure that if I unclick it and restart, I won't end up not being able to use keyboard, touchpad OR external mouse.
