I'm a former Marine (91 -95, recalled 97 - 99) so I'll give you some solid advice.
If you want to become a Scout Sniper, stay Infantry and look hard at the new Marines Special Operations Command and Force Recon. SpecOps is where you can make something of yourself in an Infantry MOS, and if you get some college while you're in (you better do it) then working for places like the FBI or a SWAT or HRT team after your first hitch on active duty could very well happen.
LAT moving to 5811 (Military Police) from an Infantry MOS (03xx) will take some work because you'll need to take some college courses on law enforcement. The other thing is MP's don't get promoted often, so if you can stand being a Lance Corporal for 6 years then go ahead and do it.

As far as being a scout sniper though, you're dead on the best route to go...stay infantry, and try out for Force Recon/MARSOC, and try and get into it that way. Good luck, and I'll probably run into you sometime whenever you hit the fleet.

They may have had that when you were in, but that's not the case any more, as far as the MP's go. No college required to get into the MP field, since they've been using FAP's and augments from other MOS's to support on base for several years now. The MP's have the biggest issue getting into civilian law enforcement, because they have no college credit/professional law enforcement training, and are usually not qualified for civilian employment as a LEO.

I've held several MOS's, most of them have been combined into the new 06xx Communications field from the old 4000 field of Data Systems:
4063 & 4067 COBOL Programmer / Ada Programmer
4066 Small Computer Systems Specialist
Billet MOS 4025 Network Control Specialist
Before the consolidation, Computer Science School was at Quantico, which is where I went twice for training. In the late 90's or soon after it was moved to Twentynine Palms (aka The Stumps) since the other comms classes were being taught there and fit in with the consolidation.
Before NMCI, I used to work for the RASC (base side G6) which changed its name to CISD, and for CNSD, which was the networking side of the house of CISD. I ran the bench repair team for computers and dot matrix/laser printers, etc., and I was also on one of the road teams where we would try to fix systems at the user location before bringing them back for bench repair. I was also there to see the transition from Banyan VINES to Windows NT 4.0, and was a network administrator for both systems.
